(NORTH HOLLYWOOD, CA – January 30, 2006) — IPC–The Hospitalist Company announced today that it has expanded into Detroit, Michigan, through the acquisition of Michigan Hospitalists, a well-established practice of approximately 70 providers in the greater Detroit area. IPC is the nation’s leading hospitalist company which already this year has announced expansions into Salt Lake City, Utah, and Ocala, Florida, and as a result, now has practice locations in 19 markets nationwide.
Michigan Hospitalists has been serving patients in the greater Detroit area (stretching as far west as Ann Arbor) since 1997 and currently experiences about 500 patient encounters a day. The vast majority of its physicians, including President/ Founder Gary Salem, D.O., and partners Michael Davis, M.D.; Paul Ragatzki, M.D.; Alan White, M.D.; and David Vandenberg, M.D., have joined the IPC team.
“We were at a critical juncture in our growth, and we knew that we would be able to achieve more by availing ourselves of the vast resources offered by IPC,” said Dr. Salem. “Their commitment to information technology, the development of their infrastructure, and their vision for defining the future of hospitalist medicine were all very appealing; so joining IPC just made a lot of sense.”
According to IPC Executive Director Glenn Appelbaum, discussions between the two organizations have been “ongoing for some time, but it was IPC’s administrative strength and back-office support that clinched the deal. Echoing the remarks of Dr. Salem, Appelbaum says that “their physicians recognized that we have the systems to support their practices and take them to the next level. And now we are aggressively recruiting additional physicians to join our practice in this market.”
Hospitalists, the nation’s fastest-growing medical specialty, are acute-care specialists who focus on a patient’s hospital care from time of admission to discharge. Increased evidence has shown that hospitalists improve quality of care and reduce healthcare costs while providing patients and their families the added comfort and security of having a physician on site to answer questions and coordinate all of the tests, treatments and services that take place within the hospital.
IPC, the nation’s premier and fastest-growing hospitalist company, currently provides inpatient care in 20 markets nationwide. No other hospitalist company matches its depth of experience and breadth of resources. The company employs approximately 500 physicians who collectively have more than 1.2 million patient visits and manage more than $1 billion in healthcare expenditures annually. These IPC physicians work closely with hospitals, health plans, and independent, locally based physicians to help drive the healthcare delivery system toward higher-quality, more patient-focused care. In doing so, IPC has been an industry leader and catalyst in the growth of hospitalist medicine.
