(JOHNSON CITY, TN – March 30, 2006) — IPC–The Hospitalist Company announced today that it has expanded into Tennessee with the acquisition of locally based Inpatient Medicine Services (IMS). With this latest expansion, its fifth already this year, IPC is now in 21 markets and 13 states nationwide.
Established in 1997 as the first hospitalist group in the area, IMS has grown from two founding physicians to 22 providers caring for patients in seven hospitals and four nursing homes throughout the tri-city area. Collectively, these physicians see about 240 patients a day, 160 of which are in Johnson City where IMS physicians are on staff at three local hospitals. Their physicians also see patients hospitalized in Greeneville, Kingsport, and Elizabethton and anticipate expanding into Morristown this summer.
IPC is the nation’s foremost hospitalist company, employing more than 500 physicians nationwide. By joining the IPC family, IMS’ physicians and nurse practitioners are now able to avail themselves of the quality-focused programs, cutting-edge technologies and strong track-record of patient satisfaction for which IPC is nationally known.
“We were attracted to IPC because they share our philosophy of quality-centered care and our vision of where the hospitalist industry is moving,” said IMS owner and president Brian Donovan, M.D. “If hospitalists are to continue to be the way optimum inpatient care is delivered, hospitalist groups need to be part of an organization that is broader than an individual hospital and have the capacity to truly establish best practices.”
Dr. Donovan also pointed to IPC’s communications software, IPC-LINK® as a decided competitive advantage. “Our group has long been committed to technology and began using a handheld device as far back as 2000. But to keep current we would have had to invest in a lot more infrastructure had we not joined IPC. That just didn’t make sense – IPC has what we need, and its infrastructure provides a great deal of support to both our own doctors as well as referring physicians.”
The fastest-growing medical specialty in the country, hospitalists have no traditional office practice and instead focus 100 percent of their time and energy in the hospital setting. IPC has shown to help drive the delivery system toward better, more patient-focused care while increasing quality and reducing costs, lengths of stay and readmit rates. The presence of an IPC physician who works in close consultation with the primary care physician also provides patients the added comfort and security of having a physician on-site to oversee care, answer questions and ensure the smooth coordination of all hospital services.
No other hospitalist company matches IPC’s depth of experience and breadth of resources. The company employs approximately 500 physicians who collectively have more than 1.3 million patient visits and manage more than $1 billion in healthcare expenditures annually. These IPC physicians work closely with hospitals, health plans and independent, locally based physicians to help drive the healthcare delivery system toward higher-quality, more patient-focused care. In doing so, IPC has been an industry leader and catalyst in the growth of hospitalist medicine.
